The Double Standards of a Housewife

Women are expected to look after the kids and house while their husbands are known as the breadwinner. In the 21st century, it is starting to be less common for women to only focus on their family. Taking a look at the double standard of a housewife can open your mind to an untraditional household. This double standard has been around for a long time and it’s time for it to go.

Men often get praised for staying at home, and doing basic parenting. When dads do the housework and focus on the kids it is praised, admired, and called babysitting. In the real world dads don’t babysit. They parent. However, women are shamed for filling in the “male shoes” of the house, and making the money. They can also be labeled as “bad mothers” if they don’t have a job and raise their children too. Based of an article called, Waging War on the Wage Gap, 29% of women are stay at home moms. Why is it still so uncommon that a woman is a money earner in a family?

I believe that it doesn’t matter who is making the money in the family as long as someone is doing them. Men shouldn’t be praised for a job that women do everyday, and women shouldn’t be shamed for wanting to provide for their family. The double standard of a housewife is a problem in American that many households face. This problem should be eliminated because there is nothing wrong with a man doing housework and a female working.
