Sex Trafficking

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

“Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. We must unite our efforts to free victims to stop this crime that’s become ever more aggressive, that threatens not just individuals, but the foundational views of society.”- Pope Francis. Sex Trafficking is the modern day slavery that our world is facing. Women are being taken and sold into sex trafficking and it feels like there is nothing we can do about it. With 100% of rapes being caused by rapist, it may seem like there is hardly anything we can do about it. The numbers of rapes are increasing everyday. As a society we can look at the causes of sex trafficking, and how to prevent it from happening.

Numerous reasons are the cause of sex trafficking. According to the website Center for Global Impact, many trafficking victims are trying to leave a place of poverty. Many traffickers lie and tell victims about stability, and job opportunities. This supports the fact that it is easy for traffickers to lie about job opportunities, because many people in poverty want a better life. The Borgen Project states that in other countries like Eritrea women who look for work have a higher risk of being in sex trafficking. This proves that it is easy for sex traffickers to get victims by lying about job opportunities. In countries like Syria the rates for sex trafficking are extremely high. A big reason for that is because of the civil war that has been continuing for years. ISIS has even given out instructions on how to catch, firmly hold, and assault women. As reported by The Borgen Project, these girls are even forced to take virginity tests before being sold. This points out the fact that we need to start doing something about this.

As a reader you may wonder what you can do about this or as a women how you can prevent yourself from becoming a statistic. Stop the Traffik was started in 2006 to try and raise awareness about sex trafficking. One of the reasons why stopping sex trafficking has been so difficult is because people don’t understand what sex trafficking is. Webster’s Dictionary defines sex trafficking as the illegal business of recruiting, harboring, transporting, obtaining, or providing a person and especially a minor for the purpose of sex. Knowing what sex trafficking is makes it easier to know what kind of things to look out for, and how to put a stop to it. Enhancing women’s education in countries sex trafficking takes place helps put a stop to sex trafficking. Another way to prevent sex trafficking is donating to nonprofit organizations. Stop the Traffik, Shared Hope International, and The A21 Campaign are all great organizations to help.

Sex Trafficking is a crime that needs to be stopped. Martin Luther King once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Sex trafficking is something that matters to me, so I am no longer going to be silent about it. It is time to make a change in our world for the better. Little girls who are getting taken away from their families are counting on people to care enough to help. I have told you the causes of sex trafficking, and how to prevent to prevent them. Now it is up to you to make the change you wish to see.
